Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.8 Review

Olympus 25mmf/1.8 M.Zuiko Blog Review

The Olympus 25mm f/1.8 M.Zuiko lens is the latest addition to the growing range of quality optics available for the micro-4/3rds system.

Olympus unusually include a lens hood with the lens which is a very welcome development.

It is a beautifully compact and lightweight optic measure just 57.8 x 42mm and weighing only 137g. It is available in both Black and Silver finishes and accepts 46mm filters.

Olympus have included 9 lens elements in the design of which two are aspherical and a 7 blade circular aperture for excellent bokeh.

Unpacking the lens, to attach the lens hood you need to first remove the ‘beauty ring’ attached to the front to reveal the bayonet fitting. The Hood is nice and deep and well made and reverses over the lens for storage.

Close-focus is a very impressive 25 cm with magnification roughly one quarter life size in 35mm terms only which is very handy.

Optical performance is really excellent. At f/1.8 the image is sharp right across the frame with exceptional central sharpness and excellent sharpness in the corners. Stopping down to f/2 maintains the central excellence and brings the corners to the same level. This is maintained at f/2.8-f/5.6 and then sharpness drops slightly as diffraction starts to take effect.

The lens is very resistant to flare and can only be provoked into some flaring by shooting directly into the sun with the sun in frame – an excellent performance.

Being a MSC lens, focussing is extremely rapid and accurate and there is really nothing not to like about this lens.

In the 25mm focal length there are two competitors – the Panasonic/Leica 25mm f/1.4 and the Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 – both are bigger and more expensive than the Olympus 25mm – especially the Voigtlander – and the Panasonic is slightly slower to focus but has the f/1.4 aperture.

So, Olympus have done it again and added another superb prime lens to go with the 12mm f/2.0, 17mm f/1.8, 45mm f/1.8, 60mm f/2.8 Macro and 75mm f/1.8.

The Olympus 25mm f/1.8 is available from Park Cameras now in Black or Silver – click the colour you want to go directly to the product page.
