I tried out the Fujifilm XF14mm f/2.8 when it was first released a few years ago. It felt nicely constructed, in keeping with other lenses available in the Fujifilm XF range, but the aperture ring felt loose, and this gave it a slightly strange feel. I didn't get that feeling of wanting to use it, unlike say the amazing XF35mm f/1.4 and the very under rated XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS. Now it seems that Fuji has addressed this issue in the later models and has tightened up the aperture ring so that it is now a superb handling lens. What I particularly like is the unusual focal length, 14mm on an APS-C sensor is 21mm on full frame.
Something currently only available on the 14mm and the 23mm, is the distance scale engraved / painted on the lens barrel and push-pull manual focus mechanism. When in autofocus mode, the focus ring is locked and won’t rotate. Pulling it back towards the camera body unlocks the barrel with a satisfyingly solid click revealing the distance markings. The focus ring is beautifully smooth with a 1/3rd turn between infinity and close focus. Thanks to regular firmware updates from Fuji now you can auto focus and then manually tweak your focus using focus peaking. (You can download all the latest firmware updates from Fujifilm for free at fujifilm.com).
While 14mm is not at the extreme end of the wide angle range on APS-C, it’s wide enough to make photos more unusual due to the fact that mostly people tend to use kit lenses and longer lenses. The downside of this is that it makes composition and exposure more complicated, as you’ve potentially got to get a lot closer to subjects to fill your frame, and there is a lot of foreground to fill. That said there is so little distortion it really is a joy to use, I would say 80% of the time this lens will be used for Landscape / seascape and maybe a bit of architectural photography, but it would also be brilliant for interior and environmental portraiture.
I think I will try this lens out with the Lee Seven5 filters system - could be interesting…
