Panasonic Lumix GH5 Review What is 6K Photo?

On Wednesday 4th January 2017 at CES 2017in Las Vegas, Nevada, Panasonic announced their brand new flagship Micro Four Thirds professional camera, the Panasonic Lumix GH5 a 4K video recording interchangeable lens camera shooting broadcast quality 4:2:2 10-bit footage alongside stunning 20MP stills, making full use of 5-axis in-camera image stabilisation.

One of the more intriguing features announced with the Lumix GH5 was Panasonic’s new 6K PHOTO.

So what actually is 6K PHOTO?

Well, you might be aware of its predecessor, 4K PHOTO, where you were able to shoot a high-speed burst of 30fps images into a burst file of photos using a camera’s 4K technology and save an 8 megapixel JPEG file from this burst.

6K PHOTO now lets you shoot a high-speed burst of up to 150 images at 30fps (so for up to 5 seconds after the initial frame) which you can then save individual frames at a massive 18 megapixels – a huge jump from the 8mp in 4K PHOTO.

These images are approximately 6000 x 3000 effective pixels and are recorded in either 4:3 or 3:2 video ratios.

These are a lot of numbers and figures, so what does this really mean for real-world use?

Imagine you’re shooting a person running, or a horse galloping, or a bird flying, or a race car zooming past – fast paced action where every frame counts – with 6K PHOTO you just put it into 6K PHOTO mode and hold the shutter button down for up to 5 seconds and the camera will shoot 150 frames at 30fps – each frame is an 18 megapixel image measuring 6000x3000 effective pixels.

You can now scroll through these images and save your favourite one, or two, or three, or four…!

In addition to the new 6K PHOTO mode, the Panasonic Lumix GH5 brings an update to the 4K PHOTO mode, which now lets you capture 60fps of 8 megapixel images for up to 5 seconds.

There are three 6K/4K PHOTO modes to choose from – 6K/4K Burst, 6K/4K Burst (Start/Stop), and 6K/4K Pre-Burst (which records frames before and after you press the shutter).
