Understanding Panasonic Post Focus

Since November 2015, Panasonic have been introducing a revolutionary new feature on a number of their LUMIX digital cameras called ‘Post Focus’, which enables post-capture focus of images. In this article, we explain how Post Focus works and what it means for your photography moving forward.

Shoot now, focus later

Modern digital photography offers numerous new features which would have probably been unimaginable for most people only a few years ago. If you had been told you would be able to take a photo and then decide what section is in focus after the event - and in-camera, it might have seemed like science-fiction! 

With Panasonic’s Post Focus function however, after-capture focusing is now a reality and brings with it a whole new world of creative possibilities. Not only does Post Focus let you choose which parts of your images are in focus after shooting, but perhaps more importantly, ensures your shots are essentially always in focus - so even if you focus incorrectly, you won’t miss out on capturing that vital moment in perfect detail.

Panasonic Post Focus technology

Post Focus works by utilising existing Panasonic 4K technology; as you capture your subject, the camera takes burst shots in 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) at 30fps across up to 49 areas within the frame. This gives you 49 different focus points to choose from, from up close and into the far distance. You can then select which still frame you require from the corresponding plane of focus with one simple touch of the camera’s screen. This is all made possible thanks to both Panasonic’s 4K technology, as well as their fast and precise Depth From Defocus (DFD) autofocus technology, that is controlled by the Venus image processing engine.

How to use Post Focus

To use the Post Focus feature, simply turn on the Post Focus mode on your camera and take your shot as you normally would. Upon reviewing your photo on your camera’s monitor screen, you can touch the area of the image that you want to be in focus, and an additional still will be produced with the post focusing you have selected now applied.

Post Focus applications and features

Besides ensuring all of your images are in focus, Post Focus can be used across numerous photographic genres, such as landscape or portrait photography, to achieve creative variations in depth of field. It’s also particularly appropriate for macro photography, where precision focusing is always of paramount importance - when shooting jewellery for example.

Various additional features are available with Post Focus, such as Focus Peaking which highlights the areas that are sharp and in focus, as well as the ability to zoom in to your image at 5x magnification and refocus accurately with the touch of your finger.

Post Focus will also be available on the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX80, along with a host of other new features. 

Panasonic Post Focus firmware update

It’s worth noting that certain models of Panasonic cameras may require a firmware update to version 2 in order to be able to use the Post Focus feature. You can download the firmware update on Panasonic’s website.
