Smart Previews in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 - Top Tutor Tip

This facility was introduced with the latest version of Adobe Lightroom and allows for images to be edited offline in Lightroom. This is particularly useful for those using a laptop and an external hard drive to store their images

Although this facility was available in version 4, it only allowed for viewing and keywording of images. The Smart Preview option now allows editing of images that are offline (external hard drive unplugged).

Once the external hard drive is reconnected metadata updates are applied to the original file and if required up sampled to the size of the file automatically (for the purpose of sharpening).

The Build Smart preview facility is found in either the Import module and can also be applied to existing images in the catalogue via the Library module.
