The Sigma 24-35mm f2 ART lens preview

Sigma have been producing a number of lenses in their ART series which have challenged the best lenses available from the camera manufacturers (such as the 24/35/50mm f/1.4 lenses) as well as some unique designs with new ranges or apertures such as the 18-35mm f/1.8 for APS-C cameras and now the new 24-45mm f/2 Art lens for full frame cameras.

So, what is special about this new lens?

The fast f/2 aperture is constant throughout the 24-35mm range so it is really rather like combining say a 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm lens all with f/2 aperture in to one lens.

Judging from the performance of the other ART series lenses, performance should be excellent if not outstanding and as such this lens should appeal to photographers looking to add a high speed prime lens to their kit.

Lens Construction
You could look at this lens as a high speed 24mm lens which zooms in to 35mm when you need to - or vice versa - or a high speed 28mm lens that lets you go a bit wider or bit narrower without moving!

The lens weighs in at a quite hefty 941g and takes large 82mm filters and at around 12cm long is much larger than say a fixed 35mm f/2 lens from Nikon or Canon with the included petal shaped lens hood adding to these dimensions.

It will be interesting to see how the lens performs optically as mechanically it is really superb.

The fit and finish is of extremely high quality. The 18 element in 13 group optical construction, using premium FLD glass and 7 SLD elements combined with a high speed HSM focus system and a 9-blade circular aperture design all bodes well for excellent performance.

Here are Park Cameras, we have already received the new 24-35mm f/2 ART lens and more supplies will be arriving regularly in both Canon and Nikon fits with Sigma mount available to order.
