Olympus OM-D E-M5 III Review

OVERVIEW

The E-M5 Mark III shares a lot in common with its predecessor, the mark ii, in terms of design. That model was already pretty small and lightweight but the mark III manages to go even lighter thanks in part to a smaller physical battery. Fortunately, it still retains the same amount of power but this allows the body to be a touch smaller and lighter. Coupled with the new synthetic body, it definitely feels lighter in the hands.

The New Olympus E-M5 III

That’s not to say it’s any less tough though. The E-M5 III has an impressive level of weather sealing making it great for everyday use, no matter the conditions.

IMAGE QUALITY

With a 20MP sensor, the E-M5 III has nice, detailed images with a little bit of room for cropping if that’s your thing. It has surprisingly impressive low light capabilities as well and with the 5-axis in body stabilisation offering up to 6.5 EV compensation, you can use a much slower shutter speed to capture photos once it’s getting darker.

It’s also blisteringly fast with a 10fps continuous shooting mode with the mechanical shutter and 30fps when using the silent electronic shutter.

VIDEO

While this camera has some great specs for stills photography, it’s certainly no slouch for video either with the ability to shoot 4K at up to 30 frames per second, cinema 4K at 24 frames per second and Full HD at up to 120 frames per second.

With the 5-axis stabilisation in the camera, it makes shooting handheld video a real possibility and certainly helps out with vlogging. In fact, vloggers are going to love this camera; with great quality 4K, a mic input and a fold out screen so you can see yourself, this is a perfect vlogging system.

AUTOFOCUS AND ADDITION FEATURES

The autofocus in the E-M5 III is exactly what I want from a good autofocus system, it’s something that I don’t really have to think about. It’s fast, it’s snappy and it’s reliable; it just works in the way you’d expect and hope for. Face detection is great for portraits making it just that bit easier to nail the focus while the overall performance is very dependable.

The camera is also packed with additional features, some that you would expect like live composite and focus stacking and come that are a nice touch.

Misty Seascape

Pro Capture allows you to half press the shutter to start capturing images which are then saved when you fully press it and capture further images. It’s a great way of making sure you nail an exciting moment in the frame.

There's also the 50MP Tripod High Resolution Shot mode which allows you to get a highly detailed shot using a tripod.

DESIGN AND FEEL

As I mentioned at the top of this blog, the camera is small, compact and lightweight; perfect for everyday use or to carry around while travelling. It’s comfortable in the hands with a deceptively nice grip. It feels deeper than it is and makes for a great shooting experience.

Portrait Photography

It’s also worth picking up on that weather sealing, it has extensive weather proofing adding to that everyday camera use and making it great for less than ideal conditions.

Ultimately, the E-M5 III is perfect for anyone who wants a more serious camera or an everyday system. It’s a great all rounder for anyone who wants to shoot a variety of photography or video and vloggers are going to find this a great system too.
