What is DJI Avata?

Before getting into all of the upgrade details, the DJI Avata drone is the Chinese company’s FPV line (First Person View), which features a built-in propeller guard for added safety. It’s based on a CineWhoop style of drone, designed to capture footage in tight spaces where full-sized drones struggle.

Avata 2 is a good starting point for beginner pilots to develop their skills, and an excellent drone for more experienced pilots to enjoy incredibly immersive flights. You really can get through smaller gaps, nearer the ground and around impossibly tight spaces, with a drone which reaches a top speed of approximately 60mph.

At launch there are three options available. These are the base model DJI Avata 2 (Drone Only), which is priced at £429.00, the easiest DJI Avata 2 Fly More Combo (1 Battery) priced at £ 879.00, and the range-topping DJI Avata 2 Fly More Combo (3 Batteries), which costs £1049.00.

When did the DJI Avata 2 come out?

DJI launched the second-generation Avata 2 drone and Avata 2 Combos on April 11, 2024. The drone came out at the same time as DJI Goggles 3 and remote controllers, with the DJI RC Motion 3 and FPV Remote Controller 3 hot on the heels of the first-gen. August 2022 launch.

What’s Avata 2 image quality like?

Thanks to a slightly larger sensor with increased dynamic range Avata 2 image quality is very good, especially when using the newly added 10-bit D-Log M Mode colour profile. Videos can be captured at up to 4K/60fps HDR*, and JPEG photos in 12 megapixel 16∶9 or 4∶3.

There’s plenty of video resolution for vertical crops, catering to TikTok and other vertical channels. You might be surprised at how smooth videos appear too, which is due to DJI’s latest RockSteady stabilisation algorithm working in unison with the aircraft’s single-axis mechanical gimbal.

*For 4K HDR ensure that EIS is turned off, recording at 4K/2.7K/1080p@60/50/30fps with a 16:9 aspect ratio or at 4K/2.7K/1080p@30fps with a 4:3 aspect ratio. You can also record 4K when EIS is set to RockSteady or HorizonSteady, recording at 4K/2.7K/1080p@30fps with either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio.

Is Avata 2 safe to fly?

Yes, Avata 2 is designed with safety as a top priority. DJI has integrated new and enhanced safety features to safeguard the aircraft, pilot, and public. These include:

• New binocular fisheye sensors enhance flight stability and safety
• DJI O4 video transmission provides enhanced stability and higher bitrates
• Goggles 3 new PiP feature is safer

Avata 2 incorporates built-in propeller guards, providing an added layer of safety compared to standard drones with exposed propellers.

Does FPV cause motion sickness?

If you’re new to FPV piloting, struggle when using VR headsets or get travel sick easily, you may find you need to take a break from FPV drone piloting every 10 minutes or so. This should alleviate with time, but always trust your body and don’t fight any sick feeling.

Can you use existing accessories with Avata 2?

Avata 2 is compatible with some existing accessories, including the DJI 65W Portable Charger and DJI 65W Car Charger. The majority of the other drone accessories are newly designed, exclusively for the latest generation drone.

What are DJI Goggles 3?

DJI Goggles 3 are equipped with two high-performance screens and ultra-low-latency image transmission for use with DJI aircraft, allowing for a real-time aerial First Person View (FPV) experience. DJI Avata 2 cannot be flown without goggles.

Goggles 3 supports Head Tracking, and with this function, the aircraft and gimbal can be controlled using head movements. When used in conjunction with the DJI Motion Controller 3, users can control the aircraft and the gimbal camera freely to meet their shooting needs in various situations.

To provide a more comfortable experience, the goggles support diopter adjustment so that glasses are not required during use. Two cameras are positioned on the front side of the goggles, in order to allow users to view the surrounding environment via Real View without removing the goggles. The goggles can also share the live view to a mobile device via Wi-Fi.

What is Goggles 3 Real View PiP?

DJI Goggles 3 are equipped with binocular cameras, in order for users to view the surrounding environment using PiP (Picture in Picture) without removing the goggles. To engage PiP, tap twice on the right side of the goggles, or press twice on the dial of the motion controller to enter Real View.

Is FPV easy to fly?

The combination of remote controller 3, Goggles 3 and DJI Avata 2 makes for an easy point and shoot flying experience, which is great for beginners and more advanced pilots. Those with more experience can take full manual control, harness new Easy ACRO and enjoy the thrill of FPV.

The addition of PiP to Goggles 3 negates the need for a spotter, however if you’re less experienced, or flying in a new environment, you may be more comfortable with the additional peace of mind, which a spotter provides. You should always understand UK drone flying rules, and adhere to local regulations, wherever you are.
