Outstanding quality and a bright aperture

With a bright f/1.2 aperture which features 13 rounded diaphragm blades, the Sigma 50mm F1.2 DG DN | Art creates beautiful bokeh effects and smooth out-of-focus areas in the image. Using the latest optical design techniques with a form comprised of 17 elements in 12 groups (including 4 aspherical elements), the lens delivers sharp results across the entire frame with exceptional contrast and colour.

Focus breathing is also heavily suppressed, enabling videographers to capture creative shots without dramatic shifts in focus.

sigma-50mm-f12-art-02

Impressive results from near to far

By correcting spherical aberration, sagittal coma flare, axial chromatic aberration, and other aberrations like double-line bokeh, the 50mm f/1.2 Art lens achieves natural bokeh with smooth blur and no colour bleeding from the focal plane.

Additionally, a floating focus system enhances its performance at short range, maintaining high optical quality across the entire focusing range, from near to far.

sigma-50mm-f12-art-03

First Sigma lens with 13 diaphragm blades

The Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E introduces a first for Sigma, with its implementation of a 13 rounded diaphragm blade design. This development ensures that when shooting subjects wide open at f/1.2, the aperture retains a circular shape.

The results allows creators to effortlessly capture portraits and still life shots with outstanding background separation, and beautifully round bokeh balls.

sigma-50mm-f12-art-04

Reduces flare, ghosting and focus breathing

This Sony E mount lens has undergone optimisation in its optical construction and focus group arrangements in order to significantly suppress focus breathing. Focus shift is also minimised, resulting in a natural focus shift look when recording video.

Thanks to a Super Multi-Layer Coating, flare and ghosting are effectively reduced, even in heavily backlit environments such as street and event photography, which helps to maintain contrast in difficult lighting conditions.

sigma-50mm-f12-art-05

Dual HLA focus motors

You can achieve effortless and reliable focus for your subject with the newly revised focusing system in this lens. Utilising a floating focusing system powered by dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motors, the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 lens maintains AF performance while reducing its size. This ensures creators experience fast, quiet, and accurate focusing, making it perfect for virtually any situation.

The AF system is fully compatible with high-speed autofocus, and offers support for DMF and AF+MF.

Unique lens design

With a unique lens and mechanical design, the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E leverages state-of-the-art production technology at Sigma's manufacturing base in Aizu, Japan. Each glass element has been reduced in size while retaining elements with a high refractive index, resulting in a more compact lens.

Four aspherical glass elements and a floating focus system are used to further reduce size while still effectively minimising aberrations. As a result, the Sigma 50mm F1.2 DG DN | Art is the lightest lens in its class, weighing only 745g and being 30% lighter than the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art which shares the same bright aperture.

Intuitive functionality

The Sigma 50mm lens for mirrorless cameras offers a variety of shooting assist functions, including a customisable AFL button. A built-in aperture control ring allows for control over depth-of-field, while an aperture ring lock switch prevents accidental knocks when in use.

An aperture click switch can be toggled to switch aperture ring clicks on or off, which is ideal for video and quiet shooting situations.

Additionally, the lens features a dust and splash-resistant structure, and the front element is coated with a water and oil repellent coating, allowing photographers to shoot confidently in harsh outdoor environments. A lockable petal shaped lens hood is included for shade, and to provide some protection for the front element.

Please note that while the structure is designed to resist dust and splashes, it is not waterproof. Avoid exposing the lens to large amounts of water, as water inside the lens may cause significant damage.

Looking to sell your Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E?

Our Verdict

The launch of the 50mm f/1.2 Art lens for mirrorless cameras marks a new era for Sigma lenses, introducing the first 13-bladed aperture design in the Art series lineup. This has increased from 11 blades, found in lenses such as the 35mm F/1.4 DG DN Art Lens, which is significant as users can achieve even smoother, and more rounded bokeh rendition.

The Sigma 50mm standard prime lens is all about depth of field and low light. It gathers around 1/2 stop more light than an f/1.4 lens such as the 50mm F/1.4 DG DN Art, while achieving a shallower depth of field for incredible subject separation and endless creative opportunities.

A portable design and high-speed AF supports the versatility of this model, with dual focus motors achieving fast and near silent focus for both stills and video recording. Video creators can also utilise this lens confidently, thanks to well suppressed focus breathing and the de-clickable aperture setting. There’s also support for AF+DMF, enabling instant manual focus override without the need to click any switches.

The popularity of 50mm lenses is enduring and the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E is an extremely compelling option for creators who want the ultimate image quality coupled with excellent useability.
