The Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW

In Lowepro’s own words this product was designed for photojournalists, yet found overwhelming popularity with the enthusiasts. The simple yet ergonomic design became a widely adopted fast-access system across many other bags on sale today. The Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW is ideal for photographers wanting to keep their camera safe without the frustration of de-mounting their camera bag at a moments notice to quickly grab a picture.

The original concept

Having a single diagonal strap crossing from your right shoulder to your left hip this camera bag becomes easy to slip on and utilising the quick-clip removing the camera bag is also stress free. A quick slide under your left arm and the bag’s opening reveals itself, allowing fast access to your camera and mounted lens of choice. The key benefit with this single strap design is that the strap can take the weight of the bag, allowing you to extract your camera, access spare memory cards and even utilise the built in lens cleaning cloth while the bag remains securely on your shoulder. Another benefit I personally found with the Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW is that the section where your camera previously resided is now an ideal home for your lens cap, the cap can then be easily found and will be ready for re-mounting once you have taken your picture and wish to put your camera away again. Lowepro continue to offer their renowned feature of All Weather protection in this camera bag, including their well proven pull out AW cover located at the base of the camera bag for when things get a bit wet.

A revised design

New to the Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW is an improved look, housing a larger personal compartment in the top of the camera bag, this now features an elastic strap ideal for the securing of instruction manuals or portable hard drives. On the right hand side of the Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW is Lowepro’s all new Hideaway Tripod Mount, this offers photographers the ability to carry differing sizes of monopod and tripod, yet crucially offers you the option of hiding the mount should it not be in use.

The Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW offers sufficient space to carry up to a large sized SLR without vertical grip and attached standard zoom lens, e.g. Nikon D800 or Canon EOS 5D with 24-70mm f/2.8. Alongside this you have two compartments on either side capable of holding 3-4 additional lenses or similar sized accessories e.g. flashguns, lights meters and radio transmitters. Should you require more space the Lowepro Slingshot 302 AW offers all the same features listed above but with the ability to carry a large SLR with vertical grip and attached large zoom lens, e.g. Nikon D4 or Canon EOS 1D X with 70-200mm f/2.8.

All things considered the Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW and Lowepro Slingshot 302 AW are well thought out, well priced and ideally sized.  These camera bags are ideal for travel, landscape, documentary-reportage and sports photographers offering fast easy access, whilst retaining secure and safe storage. Including features such as Lowepro’s AW cover and their new Hideaway Tripod Strap the Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW is a versatile camera bag which will serve you well in the field. A small point to make though is that if you are carrying the bags, in particular the Lowepro Slingshot 302 AW fully laden with heavy equipment the single strap design can cause your shoulder to tire. If this is the case Lowepro offer an alternative with similar features, the Lowepro Fastpack 250 and Lowepro Fastpack 350 offer similar capacity and features but based on a more conventional two strap design.
