Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 with 4/3rds Sensor launched.

Panasonic have announced the latest in a line of premium compacts aimed at the enthusiast market - the LX100.

The LX-3, LX-5 and LX7 have been popular because of an excellent lens coupled to a large (for a compact) sensor. The LX-100 takes this to a whole new level increasing the sensor size to 4/3rds - Five times larger than the LX7!

What does this mean? It promises much better low-light performance and to make better use of the lovely looking Vario Summilux f/1.7-f/2.8 lens.

Although the camera sports a 16MP sensor, this is cropped to provide around 12MP 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and aspect ratios and a 9.5MP 1:1  aspect ratio option.

Returning to the lens, it is a 24-75mm equivalent f/1.7-f/2.8 unit and has 9 aperture blades promising smooth bokeh. It also focusses down to an impressive 3cm and uses Panasonic's DFD focus system promising focus times of just 0.14 sec. You will be able to use the wide aperture in even the brightest light thanks to the 1/16,000th (electronic shutter option) top shutter speed too.

The ISO range is an equally impressive 100-25600 and combined with the fast lens and power OIS stabilisation included makes the camera ideal for low-light without flash shooting.

There is a 2" 921k dot LCD screen and built in XGA-resolution viewfinder and both aperture and control dials around the lens. Traditionalist photographers will love the shutter speed dial on the top of the camera too.

The LX100 is no slouch when it comes to speed either - offering up to 11fps in S-AF mode and 6.5fps in C-AF mode.

Wifi with NFC is incorporated and video fans are well catered for with 4K video recording at 30p and Full HD at 60p.

The LX100 sits between the Sony RX100 series and Canon G1X II in terms of size and weight at 339g with battery and card installed and 114.8x66.2x55mm - so not jeans pocket pocketable but reasonable for the specification.

We shall have the LX100 on demonstration this Saturday 20th September in our Burgess Hill store and again on the 27th September in our London store - so why not come down and see what you think of the LX100.

Plus, pre-order the Panasonic LUMIX LX100 from Park Cameras between 15th September and 30th November 2014 and you'll qualify for a FREE Retractable Lens Cap which you can claim from Panasonic UK. Terms and conditions apply. For full details and to claim, visit www.Panasonic.co.uk.
